How does a thin-film evaporator work?

A thin-film evaporator is a type of evaporator, mainly composed of a heating chamber and a separation chamber. According to the structure of the heating chamber and the flow of the solution during operation, commonly used indirectly heated evaporators in industry can be divided into two categories: circulating type (non-film type) and single-pass type (film type). Thin-film evaporators belong to the single-pass type evaporators.

A thin-film evaporator consists of three components: an evaporator, a vapor-liquid separator, and a preheater, as well as a simple separator. The evaporator is an ascending film type shell and tube heat exchanger. It works by using a rotating wiper to force film formation and high-speed flow, resulting in high heat transfer efficiency and short residence time (about 10-50 seconds). It is a new type of evaporator that can perform falling film evaporation under vacuum conditions.
The material enters the evaporator radially from above the heating zone; it is distributed to the heating wall of the evaporator via a distributor, and then, the rotating wiper scrapes the material into a film of uniform thickness on the heating surface continuously and uniformly, and pushes it downward in a spiral shape. In this process, the rotating wiper ensures the continuous and uniform liquid film generates high-speed turbulence and prevents coking and scaling of the liquid film on the heating surface, thereby increasing the overall heat transfer coefficient.
